south mound cemetery

South Mound Cemetery in New Castle is located off of State Road 3
at 505 Bundy Avenue.

South Mound Cemetery has a long and storied history. It was originally formed by James A. McMeans, E. B. Martindale, Miles Murphey, Joshua Holland, James Ferris and forty other citizens of Henry County and the State of Indiana, when they formed themselves into a Corporation, with a Capitol Stock of Three Thousand Dollars for the purpose of purchasing, owning, providing, and selling off suitable grounds for the Burial of the Dead in the vicinity of New Castle, IN, under the name of the New Castle Cemetery Association. Six acres of land was purchased from Jacob and John Thornburg and afterwards, at a meeting of the said board of directors, held on the 12th day of July, 1859, the said ground having been regularly laid out into blocks and lots, was named the South Mound Cemetery.  The first burial was in 1859.
