AMERICUS — Mr. Alton E. “Ed” Smitherman, 78 , of 201 17th Green Street Americus died at his residence early Tuesday afternoon March 13, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday March 16 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Dupree and Rev. Jim McIlrath officiating. Burial services will follow at 2:00 p.m. Friday March 16 at Andersonville National Historic Site Cemetery at the Rostrum with full Masonic Rites and Military honors. The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church Parlor from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. before services and at other times the family residence 201 17th Green Street Americus. The following are asked to serve as active pallbearers Scott Smitherman, Steve Smitherman, Garland Mears, H.P. Ritch, Ron Phillips and Floyd Martin.

Mr. Smitherman was born March 21, 1928 the son of the late Clyde Smitherman and Odell Wallace Smitherman in Marvel, AL. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Master Sergeant after twenty years service; during his term of service he served in the Berlin Airlift and the Vietnam Conflict. He was retired from the US Secret Service as Special Officer after twenty years service, having served during President Jimmy Carter administration. He was a 32nd degree Mason with 50 years of service. During his term in the military and secret service he traveled the world and was an avid golfer and fan.

Mr. Smitherman is survived by his loving wife Emily Smitherman of Americus; a daughter Michelle Smitherman of Americus; a brother and sister-in-law; Bobby G. Smitherman and Charlotte of Huey Town, AL; two nephews; Scott Smitherman and wife Michelle of Jacksonville, FL. and Steve Smitherman and wife Shelly of Nashville, TN; a great niece Zoe Smitherman and a great nephew Zack Smitherman both of Nashville, TN. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Americus and Sumter County, Inc. P.O.
