Margaret anne (shore) smitherman

Anne Shore Smitherman, 85, of East Bend, went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 25, 2017, at Yadkin Nursing Center, following a short illness. She was born March 27, 1932 to the late Luther and Thelma Reece Shore in Yadkin County, North Carolina.

Anne was a faithful member of Forbush Friends Meeting where she served as pianist for many years until arthritis began afflicting her fingers and hands. She willingly shared her music at special events including weddings and funerals for family and friends. “Mrs. Anne” enjoyed teaching elementary school children at Fall Creek and East Bend until her retirement, having taken off briefly for the birth of her two sons. Following her retirement, students often greeted her in public places, even stopping in at the nursing home, to reminisce about their experiences. For many years, she was known for baking delicious cakes. She was envied by many for her ability to always have a neat and tidy house, a perfectly trimmed yard and also for her stylish dress and fun-loving personality. She enjoyed traveling and going out with friends and most of all loved and cherished her family and extended family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Derl Gray Smitherman; sister, Susan Steelman, brother Jack Shore, brothers-in-law, Hal Smitherman and Johnny Williard. She is survived by her two sons, Wayne (Debbie) Smitherman and Mark (Teresa Beach) Smitherman; grandsons, Darrin (Liz) Smitherman and Brandon (Courtney Branch) Smitherman; great-grandson, Drake Smitherman, who always put a smile on her face; a brother, Wiley (Shelby) Shore; sisters–in-law, Janice Williard and Bessie Smitherman and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 27 at 4:00 PM at Forbush Friends Meeting with Jake Penley and Ray Lambe officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the sanctuary. Anne’s family wishes to express appreciation to the staff and nurses at Yadkin Nursing Center for their care and to the many friends who stopped in for visits. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Forbush Friends Meeting, c/o Mary Wooten, 2821 Mill Hill Rd, East Bend, NC 27018.
