Arthur jackson smitherman

A.J. Smitherman, 84, of Fayetteville died Friday, June 25, 2004, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fayetteville.

He was born Nov. 27, 1919, at Springdale, the son of Harold and Dola Dyes Smitherman. He was a land technician for the Arkansas Western Gas Company. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II and served honorably in the Pacific Theater.

He was a Little League coach and served as President of the Babe Ruth League. He also served as president of the Exchange Club and the Northwest Arkansas Shriner's Club. He was a Mason and a Shriner. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Mohney and Mary Frances Reid and a brother, Bill Smitherman.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Smitherman of the home; one son, Jack D. Smitherman of Corpus Christi, Texas; one daughter, Dyan Brannon of Fayetteville; one brother, Bob Smitherman of Springdale; two grandchildren, Brandon Williams and wife Misty, David Brannon; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Williams, Jacob Williams.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 28, at Moore's Chapel with Dr. Maurice Roberts and the Rev. Nancy Benson-Nicol officiating. Burial will be in the National Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Moore's Chapel.
