augusta mae (pitts) smitherman

"Her children rise up and call her blessed." Proverbs 31:28. Our mother passed away of natural causes at her home in Walker on Friday, March 6, 2009, at 10:25 p.m. She was 89, born May 12, 1919, in Baton Rouge. Visiting will be at Walker Baptist Church on Monday, March 9, from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Burial to follow in the church cemetery. The service will be conducted by Dr. Richard Blue, pastor, and her nephew, the Rev. James Clyde Pitts.

She is survived by a son, Jerry Smitherman and wife Pat; three daughters, Julia "Judy" S. Pearce, Carolyn S. Steakley and husband Whit, and Sharron Smitherman; nine grandchildren, Teresa Williamson, Scotty Smitherman, Jeff Smitherman, Kevin Pearce, Timothy Pearce, Gregory Pearce, Suzanne Steakley, Melodie Viator and Leah Crecelius; 18 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by her parents, William S. and Caroline Thompson Pitts; husband, Dawson H. Smitherman; three sisters, four brothers, an infant son and a special son-in-law, Clarence D. Pearce.

Pallbearers will be her son, Jerry Smitherman, grandsons, Kevin, Tim and Greg Pearce, great-grandsons, Logan Pearce and Judd Crecelius, and son-in-law, Whit Steakley. Honorary pallbearers are Jared Hilton, Jacob Pearce, Caleb Pearce, Nathan Pearce, Jerry Pitts, James Nobles, and her Melanie Street neighbors.

She will be sorely missed by her family and many friends. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the food pantry at Walker Baptist Church. Arrangements by Renaissance Services Inc., 12552 Airline Highway, Gonzales, (225) 644-2976.
