bertha (reed) brown

Graveside services for Bertha Reed Brown, 98, formerly of Lubbock will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, at the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Mrs. Brown died Wednesday, April 28, 2004.

Bertha was born May 28, 1905 in Lockney to J.O. and Molly Wood Reed. She graduated from Slaton High School in 1924 and attended West Texas State Teachers College. Mrs. Brown married Olan Brown in O'Donnell in 1927 and he preceded her in death May 1, 1972. She retired in 1970 from Singer Sewing Machine Company in Beeville after teaching the craft of sewing for many years.

She was active with the Home Demonstration Club in Beeville, and the Beeville Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday school classes. While living in Lubbock from 1971 until 2001, she was a member of Sunset Church of Christ. Mrs. Brown moved to Dallas in October of 2001. Mrs. Brown was a sweet spirited and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who was loved by all of her family and friends. And she has go ne to a much better place.

Survivors include her daughters, Vinita Faye Elling and her husband, Walter, of Beeville, Shirley A. Smitherman and her husband, John, of Danville, Ind., and Barbara J. Hunter and her husband, Royce, of Dallas; 11 grandchildren, Susan Dobra, Larry Elling, Melinda Hammond, Crystal Clifton, Connie Goins, Caryn Parsons, Carol Barnett, John Smitherman, Jr., Suzanne Ford, Ronald Hunter and Lorri Kendrick; 23 great-grandchildren; siblings, Juanita Walthal of Lubbock, Nadine Dikes of Mineral Wells, and A.D. Reed of Albuquerque, N.M. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. tonight at Franklin-Bartley Funeral Home.
