Betty Jo (Smitherman) Land, 58, died on Thursday, June 9, 2005, at Hutcheson Medical Center.

She served at Ringgold First Baptist Church as President of the J.O.Y. Choir and was an active member of the Pioneer Sunday School class. She was also the "Queen Mum" of a local Red Hatters society known as the Hattitudes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Taylor Smitherman and Mary Jo Warren Smitherman; brothers Lavoy "Bob" Smitherman and Donald Eugene Smitherman; and sisters, Brenda Bradley and Marian Smitherman.

Mrs. Land is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Lenus Ray Land, and two adoring sons, Shane, currently on active duty for deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Tyson.

Mrs. Land also leaves behind a wonderfully loving extended family of brothers and sisters, Charles Smitherman, Pine Mountain, Ga., Arvile Smitherman, Marietta, Ga., LaDonna Strickland, Hiram, Ga., Erleene Templeton and Jerry Smitherman, Ringgold; mother-in-law: Mae Hullender Smitherman, Ringgold; sisters-in-law: Bernice Orr, Ringgold and Faye Wise, LaFayette; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ringgold First Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Whitaker officiating. Interment in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

The family will receive friends after 1 p.m. Saturday, after 12:30 p.m. Sunday and after 8 a.m. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway.
