Smitherman Ward, 91, of Lenoir went to her heavenly home Wednesday,
June 6, 2012 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.Mrs. Ward was born in Watauga County to the late Joseph Y. Smitherman and Lula Florence Rowe Smitherman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Brent Adams; five sisters and four brothers.
She was a graduate from Bethel High School in Watauga County in 1938. She was an active member of Central Baptist Church in Whitnel for over 50 years.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Harrison Ward of the home; her daughters, Shirley McKinney and Husband John of Gamewell, and Joyce Beane and husband William "Moe" of Lenoir; two grandchildren, Amanda Woody of Lenoir and Monica Hayes of Charlotte.
A funeral service will be held Friday, June 8, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at Central Baptist Church with Reverend John Jernigan officiating. Burial will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Serving as pallbearers will be friends of the family.
