charles William Lemons

Charles William "Bill" Lemons, age 91, of Troy, died Thursday, September 4, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Lemons was born December 22, 1916 in Montgomery County, N.C., the son of the late James and the late Mattie (Burke) Lemons. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Troy High School, attended Lees-McRae College and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was owner and operator of the Stop and Shop Grocery Store for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Nell Smitherman Lemons; his brothers, Junie Lemons, Ed Lemons, Harrell Lemons, Bob Lemons and Moody Lemons; sisters, Grace Thayer, Sara Brittian, Taff Harris and Louise Arthur.

In a Montgomery Herald article published August 2, 1984, shortly before Lemons closed the Stop and Shop, Mary Anderson wrote, “Bill Lemons has been in the grocery store business for more consecutive years than anybody else he knows. Not counting the years he worked in his father’s and then his brother’s stores while he was growing up in Troy, he began full-time in the spring of 1946, shortly after his discharge from the U.S. Army.” In the story Lemons talked about the business he and his wife Nell ran for all those years. “ The Stop and Shop is small by food market standards, yet people drive across town to shop there. ‘It is the way we treat people,’ Bill said. ‘It is a homey atmosphere and we offer good quality and good service.’”

Upon his decision to close, Lemons knew that some of his customers on a fixed income would not be able to pay their bill and have money for the next month’s grocery’s so those customers did not receive a bill that month. That is how Lemons was, always looking out for people.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary L. Smitherman and 15 nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Sunday in the church fellowship hall from 2-3 p.m. The funeral was Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 239 N. Russell Street, Troy with Rev. Bobby Tyson Jr. officiating. Burial followed at Southside Cemetery, Troy.
