| Charlotte Smitherman Hamner, age 76, of Tuscaloosa, died February 14,
2016. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday, February 18, 2016, at Christ
Episcopal Church with Dr. Catherine Collier officiating. Burial will
follow in Sunset Brown-Service Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home,
A Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be 1 p.m.
Thursday, February 18, 2016, at the church.She was preceded in death by
her husband, Sidney Wright Hamner; mother, Annie Gray Smitherman; and
her father, William Hollis Smitherman.Survivors include her son, Kevin
Randel Hamner of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and her sister, Linda Fay Armor of
Chattanooga, Tenn.She never failed to think of others before herself
and it was this giving spirit that defined her not only as a Social
Worker but as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and mother-in-law, and
friend. Charlotte was a lifetime resident of Tuscaloosa graduating from
Tuscaloosa High School in 1958 and the University of Alabama in 1962
and 1969. At the time of her passing, Charlotte was Director of Social
Work at Bryce Hospital. She was a Social Worker in Tuscaloosa over 50
years including 15 years at Bryce Hospital and 35 years with the VA
Administration. She was passionate about her work including being a
strong advocate for Vietnam Veterans. Charlotte is a member of Christ
Episcopal Church. She shared her exceptional piano talent with her
churches over a lifetime, patients at Bryce and VA hospitals, family
and friends. She was enthusiastic all her life about her varied
hobbies: gardening, cooking, travel, antiques, and art. Pallbearers are
Charles Armor, Chris Armor, Philip Hudson, Bryan Armor, Vial Fontenot
and Charles Nevels.Honorary pallbearers will be the Social Work staff
of Bryce Hospital, Social Work staff of VA Medical Center, Jaime Luna,
Clara Bermudez, Carolina Luna, Maria Luna, Cleofe Charry, Dr. Ross
Vaughn, MD., Dr. Mohammad Azam, MD., Dr. Subramaniam Sundar, MD., Dr.
Neil Kakati and Vickie Hatcher.
