Christine Smitherman Phillips, 94, of Buford passed peacefully Monday, March 10, 2014, at Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
Christine was born in Thaxton, Miss., Nov. 20, 1919. She was raised and graduated High School in Toccopola, Miss. Her Father was the Rev. Dave Smitherman, a circuit preacher for the Methodist church. She left her home in Toccopola after graduating High School and moved to Columbus, Miss., to pursue her future. It was there she met her future husband, Walter S. Phillips Jr. After having two children and a wonderful 30 years of marriage, Walter passed away in 1970. After her husband's death she remained in their home in Norcross, Ga., and worked for a short time at J.C. Penney. Christine loved her Lord and was very active in all the Churches she attended. She touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with her outgoing attitude, strong faith and effervescent personality.
She is survived by one son, W. Sam Phillips of Statesville, N.C.; and one daughter, Christine Bailey of Gainesville, Ga.; along with seven grandchildren, Sammy, Shannon, Steven, Misty, Esther, Sarah and Edward. She has 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild who also all survive her.
