dalton lakey smitherman

Dalton "Lakey" Smitherman, 80, of Santa Rita, a retired Montana Power employee, died of natural causes Saturday at a Great Falls hospital.  

A memorial service will take place at a later date.  Glacier Funeral Chapel is in charge of cremation and arrangements.

He was born March 10, 1917, in East Bend, N.C., and was an airplance mechanic in the Army during World War II.

In 1951 he married Margaret B. Seymour in Shelby.

Smitherman worked for Natural Gas Co., Montanta Dakota Utilities and Montana Power.  He retired from Montanta Power after 31 years of service.

He was a member of the Reformed Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Missouri and attended the Mountain View Baptist Church in Cut Bank.  He was active in Little League and Boy Scouts, enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing pinochle, and was an Atlanta Braves fan.

Survivors include his wife of Santa Rita; three daughters, Virginia Erikson, Patricia Smitherman of Washington and Margaret Hall of Great Falls; two sons, Dalton Smitherman Jr. of George, Utah, and George Smitherman of Yuma, Ariz.; a sister, Betty S Jones of Mockville, N.C., and Alvis A. Smitherman of West Virginia; 11 grandchildren and six great-granchildren.
