A retired farmer, he died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2006, at his home in Walker. He was 93 and a native of Jonesboro. Visitation at Walker Baptist Church, Walker, from 11 a.m. Monday, April 24, until religious service at 1 p.m., conducted by Dr. Richard Blue. Interment in Walker Baptist Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Augusta Pitts Smitherman; three daughters, Sharron Smitherman, Walker, Carolyn Sargent and husband John, Denham Springs, and Julia Pearce and husband Clarence, Walker; son, Jerry Smitherman and wife Pat, Katy, Texas; nine grandchildren, Teresa S. Williamson and husband Danny, Baton Rouge, Scott Smitherman and wife Anna, and Jeff Smitherman and wife Rhonda, all of Conroe, Texas, Kevin Pearce and wife Marsha, Statesville, N.C., Tim Pearce and wife Pam, Harmony, N.C., Greg Pearce and wife Laura, Denham Springs, Suzanne Steakley, Luling, Melodie Viator, Palestine, Texas, and Leah Crecelius and husband Kelvin, Athens, Texas; and 18 great-grandchildren, Ashleigh and Stormie Williamson, both of Baton Rouge, Courtney, Lindsey, Amber and Justin Smitherman, all of Conroe, U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Ashley Pearce, serving in Iraq, Jessie Pearce, Statesville, Jacob, Caleb and Nathan Pearce, all of Harmony, Raegan, Hayley and Logan Pearce, all of Denham Springs, Jared Hilton, Stonewall, Jordan Menard, Palestine, and Judson and Trigger Crecelius, both of Athens.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Julia Black Pearce [sic Smitherman]; three brothers and eight sisters.

Pallbearers will be Ruffin Griffin, Jeff Fletcher, and grandsons, Kevin, Tim and Greg Pearce and Jeff Smitherman. Honorary pallbearers are his Melanie Street neighbors.
