dolores "dodie" (worthy) smitherman
Dodie was born Dolores Rae
Worthy on October 29, 1936 and went to be with our Lord on Tuesday,
January 15, 2013, with her loving husband Tom at her side. She
was born in Covina, California to Otto and Beatrice Worthy who have
preceded her in death. She attended La Puente High School and Mt.
San Antonio Junior College. On September 21, 1956 she married Leo
Lyle Barber and they divorced in 1959. On May 21, 1966 she
married Thomas J Smitherman, and they remained married until her
death. Shortly after she marrried Tom, he was awarded custody of
his two children from a previous marriage, Myrna and Todd, and she
raised them as her own. On January 4, 1969 she gave birth to her
only child, Tamara Jean.
Dodie loved Jesus, her family, kids and animals. She taught Sunday school, and worked with youth groups most of her adult life. She worked for the Whittier, California public library in the children's department with her life-long friend "Monkey". She also volunteered with the local police department to organize block homes and neighborhood watch programs.
Dodie is survived by her husband Tom; one brother Larry (Margie); two nieces: Cindy and Terri; two nephews: Bob and Jerry; her daughter Tamara; a son, Todd (Peggy); daughter, Myrna (Art); six grandchildren: Patty, T.J., Joe (Angel), Tasha (Bill), Katrina, and Sean, nine great-grandchildren and also many special friends, including Monkey and Margarette.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on March 10, at Community Presbyterian Church, 201 SE 8th St., P.O. Box 359, Oakland, Oregon 97462, with a reception following in the downstairs social hall. The Rev. Kathleen Brinegar is officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the church or a charity of your choosing.
