doris (van Buskirk) smitherman

Doris Marie “Dot” Smitherman, 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at her home in the Harmony community. She was born Nov. 21, 1930 in Lee County to Nola and Charlie Van Buskirk. She worked in a shirt factory, she was a homemaker for many years, and then she worked at the Pontotoc Nutrition Center. She loved to piece quilts, quilt, play cards, and spend time with her family and friends.

Services were Thursday, Feb. 25, at Baldwin-Nowell Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Herndon and Bro. Stark Aldridge officiating. There were no graveside service.

Survivors include Ryan Thompson, who was loved more than a grandson, and his two children, Landen and Lexie Thompson, all of Pontotoc; two sisters, Ann Bently and Syble Roper of Saltillo; several nieces and nephews; and her caregivers, Charlie W. and Joyce Swords, and Janice Clayton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Lloyd Baldwin; her second husband, James Smitherman; three sisters, Mary Duke, Iva Dye and Mildred Davenport; and one brother, J.C. Van Buskirk.

Pallbearers were Charlie W. Swords, Josh Swords, Tracy Clayton, Joey Cruse, Terry Bently and Dayton Bently.
