SMITHERMAN EAST BEND - Edgar "Ed" Martin Smitherman, 83, of East Bend, died Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at his home. He was born in Yadkin County on November 16, 1924 to Robert S. and Ila Hennings Smitherman. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Smitherman served in the US Army during World War II, retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after 33 years, and was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Teresa Jean Smitherman, brothers, R.B. Smitherman, Willie Smitherman, Jack Smitherman, Johnny Smitherman, and, Howard Gray Smitherman. Surviving are his wife, Aggie Speer Smitherman of the home; a sister, Betty Collins of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 11, 2008, at 2:00 P.M., at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Cathy Turman and the Rev. Janet Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Stony Knoll United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 10, 2008, from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., at the funeral home.
