Effie Smitherman West was the daughter of Isaac Newton and Martha E. Smitherman of Van Buren, Arkansas. She married Mirton West.She was the mother of Alvin J. West, Martha Jane West, Eugene West, Kenneth West, Cecil West, Billy West and Dale West.
She had two sisters, Susie Lee Smitherman Furrow of Arkansas and Maggie Bailey of Arkansas. Also, two half sisters, Edith G. Peel Davis and Sybil E. Smitherman Bruns of Van Buren and two half brothers, Isaac Newton Smitherman Jr. of Van Buren, Arkansas and Rufus E. Peel of California.
