Mrs. Eileen Smitherman
Carter
Burke, 78, of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the Kate
B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Sept. 30, 1922, in Yadkin County
to Doc Benbow and Emma Binkley Smitherman. Mrs. Burke was a member of
Gibsonia Baptist Church in Lakeland, Fla., and had retired from
AT&T with 26 years of service. She was a member of the
Telephone
Pioneers of America. Preceding her in death was a grandson, Mark Hayes.
Surviving are her husband, Rodney Burke of the home; a son, Sonny
Carter and wife Nann of Clemmons; two daughters, Geraldine Hayes and
husband Don of Winston-Salem and Judy Briggs of Winston-Salem; six
grandchildren, Beth Holder, Lynn Ruppard, Kim Vaughn, Jason Briggs, and
Catherine and Carrie Carter; four great-grandchildren; two
stepdaughters, Elizabeth Beaver and husband Pete of Melbourne, Fla.,
and Janice Miller of Melbourne; four stepgrandchildren; seven
stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Funeral
services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller
Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Dana Wooten and the Rev. G. Thomas
Shelton. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will
receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials
may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane,
Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
