SMITHERMAN, GROVER D., age 88, of lifelong resident of Randolph, Alabama passed away May 28, 2005 at Floyd E. "Tut" Fann State Veterans Home in Huntsville, Alabama. Mr. Smitherman, the last surviving World War II ex-POW in Bibb County, was a true memeber of the "Greatest Generation: as he served his country with pride. He was born August 7, 1916 to Henry Horace Smitherman and Seduthera Posey Smitherman. He is survived by one brother, Floyd Smitherman and is predeceased by his wife Gladys Epperson Smitherman and his brothers Curtis and Grady Smitherman. Survivors include his three children and their spouses, R. Oneal Smitherman and his wife Patsy Linton Smitherman of Auburn, AL, Marshall Smitherman and his wife Patty Wheeler Smitherman of Atlanta, GA and Patti Smitherman Pruitt and her husband Thomas M. Pruitt of Huntsville, AL. His devoted grandchildren are Thomas Patrick Pruitt of Glenn Mills, PA, Amy Pruitt Buckley and her husband Steven of Huntsville, AL, Melissa Pruitt Otwell and her husband Russell of Haymarket, VA, Amanda Smitherman of Atlanta, GA, Katie Smitherman Kirkpatrick and her husband Dow of Atlanta, GA, Shelly Smitherman Parks and her husband Mike of Birmingham, AL and Susan Smitherman White and her husband Jason of Auburn, AL. Mr. Smitherman's survivors also include eight great grandchildren, Hawley Christine Pruitt, Courtney Elizabeth Pruitt, Collin Patrick Buckley, Anna Carolyn Buckley, James McKenzie Otwell, Jon Thomas Otwell, Jackson Murphy Otwell, and Dow Napier Kirkpatrick IV.

Services will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Randolph, Alabama. The family will receive friends from Noon to 2:00 p.m. at the church and invites everyone to a reception in the Fellowship Hall following the services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shady Grove Baptist in Randolph, Alabama with preference given to the Fellowship Hall Fund. Rockco Funeral Home of Montevallo, Alabama has been entrusted with arrangements.
