hazel emma (herbst) smitherman

Hazel Emma Smitherman, 90, passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003. She was born March 18, 1913, to Theodore and Christina Fritz Herbst in Kimble County, being the seventh of eight children.

She graduated from London High School in April 1913 and then married Joseph M. Smitherman Sept. 30, 1930. They resided first in Blanco County then moved to Henly area of Hays County. She and her husband farmed and ranched until his death in 1973. They were active in the community through the Henly Baptist Church.

She served many years as an election clerk for the precinct and became a member of the Henly Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She belonged to the Hill Country Activity Center in Drippping Springs for many years. Her last five years were spent with her daughter in Johnson City.

She is survived by daughter, Louise Gravenor of Johnson City and Son Joe Wayne Smitherman and wife Anita of Blanco; grandchildren Peggy Ginn and husband Joe, Annette Moore and husband Kenny, Nancy Romero and husband Tito, Steve Smitherman and wife Laurie, Gary Smitherman and wife Tracy; great-grandchildren, Dylan Ginn, Many, Kelsey, Shelby, Jake and Ross Smitherman; sister-in-law Lois Herbert of Grand Junction, Colorado.

She was proceeded in death by husband Joseph M. Smitherman; son-in-law Benwill Gravenor; three brothers William, August and Paul Herbst; and four sisters Bertha Copeland, Erna Chandler, Ella Mae Smitherman and Bess Winkle.

Pallbearers were Steve and Gary Smitherman, Tito Romero, Joe and Dylan Ginn and Kenny Moore.

Services were held Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at Crofts Funeral Home in Johnson City followed by Hazel being laid to rest in the Phillips Cemetery in Dripping Springs.
