ALEXANDRIA — Funeral services for Hugh Rubin Smitherman Sr., 91, will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Reaves and the Rev. Mike Owens officiating. Burial will be in Anniston Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 until service time. Mr. Smitherman died Friday at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Zora Smitherman; seven children, Patricia White (James), Mary Hess (Charles), Ronnie Smitherman (Judy), Hugh Rubin Smitherman, Jr. (Janice), William F. (Bill) Smitherman (Barbara), the Rev. Dr. George Smitherman (Diane) and Glenda Mangham (Dennis); 17 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Calhoun County Civil Defense. Mr. Smitherman was retired from the Alabama Pipe Co. in 1970 to become Director of Civil Defense of Calhoun County and retired from this position in May of 1983. In 1962, he helped to form a radio group comprised of local citizens who wanted to help others known as the Civil Defense Radio Group and is currently known as Calhoun County Civil Defense. He served eight years on the Calhoun County Board of Education and was a member of Leatherwood Baptist Church.
