James Donald Smitherman, 83, of Lawley, passed away Jan. 11.

He was born on July 20, 1930, in Hale County, the son of the late Morgan L. Smitherman and the late Lucy Irene Wright Smitherman.

He retired as Chief Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church No. 2.

Surviving are his son, Jimmy D. Smitherman (Sylvia) of Mathews; grandsons, Joey Smitherman of Mathews, Justin Smitherman of Montgomery; granddaughter, Janey Smitherman of Mathews; nieces, Jennie Smith of Lawley and Renee Reynolds of Lawley; nephews, Cliff Smith of Lawley, Larry Smitherman of San Antonio, Texas, Jimmy Smitherman of Thorsby, Freddie Smitherman of Clanton and Tony Reynolds of Lawley.

He was preceded in death by his two sisters and a brother.

Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 14 at Martin Funeral Home.

Services will be held Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church No. 2 with the Rev. Robert Gibson and the Rev. Tony Reynolds officiating.

Interment will be at 2 p.m. in the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church No. 2 in Lawley.
