EAST BEND - Mr. James Edward "Ed" Smitherman, 77, of Shady Grove Church Road, East Bend, died Saturday, May 20, 2006, at his residence. He was born in Forsyth County on May 7, 1929, to the late Gorrell Smitherman and Fannie Hennings Smitherman. Mr. Smitherman was retired from Sarah Lee Corp. with 43 years of service and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was also a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bryce Smitherman Sr.; and an infant brother. Surviving are his wife, Annie Phillips Smitherman of the home; a son, Edward Dean Smitherman of the home; a daughter, Tracy Ann Smitherman of the home; a brother, Roy Smitherman (Ann) of East Bend; a sister, Edith Johnson of Asheboro; sister-in-law Mollie Smitherman of East Bend; several special nieces and nephews; and a special dog, Blackie. The funeral service for Mr. Smitherman will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 22, at Shady Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service hour. The family will receive friends at 7 p.m. today, May 21, at Huff Funeral Home.
