Bend- Mrs. Jessie Pearl Mickey Smitherman, age 95 of Shady Grove Road
passed away on Saturday September 2nd, 2017. She was born on
January 9, 1922 in Yadkin County to the late Henry Jacob and Eliza Jane
Wall Mickey. She was married to her beloved husband , Reverend
David Glenn Smitherman for 64 years. They made their first home
on Shady Grove Road and there they owned and operated Shady Grove Dairy
Farm for many years. They founded East Bend Evangelical Methodist
Church in 1958 where she held many positions and remained a faithful
member. Growing up she was a member of New Home United Methodist
Church. She lived her entire life in the Smithtown and East Bend
area. She was one of very few people remaining who attended
Smithtown Elementary School through the 7th grade and she also attended
East Bend School. As a young girl, she was taught piano lessons
by Lucy Bell Matthews Miller and she used the skill and talent in her
ministry throughout her life. She loved the simple act of sharing
and knew that to be a part of God’s plan for our lives. She was a
person of pure faith.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death be several brothers and sisters.
Those left to cherish her memory include two sons Mickey Wayne (Hilda) Smitherman and Timothy Andrew (Vickie) Smitherman; four grandchildren Loris Smitherman (Danny) Coe, Maurice (Shonda) Smitherman, Sterling (Ashley) Smitherman, and Parker (Morgan) Smitherman; great grandchildren Ryan Coe, Reid Coe, Saylor Smitherman, Sidney Smitherman, Sanibell Smitherman, Mady Smitherman, Ella Smitherman, Eli Smitherman, and Nora Smitherman. There are also several nieces and nephews from the Mickey and Smitherman families all of whom Jessie Pearl held dear to her heart.
The family would like to thank Mary Griffin, Lisa Hampton, and Sammy Lawson for their loving care of Mrs. Smitherman.
A funeral service for Mrs. Smitherman will be held on Tuesday September 5th at 4pm at East Bend Evangelical Methodist Church. Burial will follow in East Bend Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2pm-4pm on Tuesday at the church prior to the service.
