Mrs. Lucy Smitherman May, 92, of 1885 Peoria Road, Sugar Grove, wife of the late William Spencer May, died Wednesday morning, June 5, 2002, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 25, 1909, in Sugar Grove, Watauga County, to the late Joseph and Florence Rowe Smitherman.

Mrs. May was a homemaker and retired from Watauga County Hospital after 17 years of service as a baker and cook. She was a member of Timbered Ridge Baptist Church.

Survivors include one granddaughter, Paula May Townsend and husband, Randy, and one great-granddaughter, Caitlin Lucy Townsend, all of Sugar Grove; four sisters, Mrs. Ruth May and Beulah Ward and husband, H.W., all of Lenoir; Mrs. Mae Jones of De Land, Fla. and Mrs. Sarah Martin of Limestone, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Betty V. Smitherman of Boone. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including James C. Smitherman and wife, Ruth, of Granite Falls.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mozella Matheson; three sons, Kenneth Dwight May and infant twins, Harold and Darrell May; one sister, Mrs. Pearl Harmon; and four brothers, Lloyd Smitherman, George Smitherman, Grady “Slim” Smitherman and Lewis Smitherman. Services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Derick Wilson and the Rev. Ray Greene officiating.

Burial followed in the Green Cemetery in Sugar Grove.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Timbered Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund, in care of Dana Millsaps, 304 Smith Henson Road, Sugar Grove, N.C. 28679.

Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
