Marietta
Del Favero Smetherman of New Orleans passed away suddenly yet
peacefully on Tuesday, December 13th. She is survived by her husband,
Dan, of New Orleans and her daughter, Shaela Dejean Parrott of San
Diego. Preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Ella Del Favero,
Marietta also leaves two brothers, Tony (Cyndi) of Castro Valley, CA,
and Albie (Sara) of Nashville, TN. She also leaves four stepdaughters;
Dana Smetherman, Collin Ginsberg and Ashley Lemmler of New Orleans and
Lauren Lacerda of Cincinnati; six step-grandchildren and a host of
nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved. Marietta was born and raised
in Nashville but New Orleans held a special place in her heart. She was
a float lieutenant for the Ponchartrain Carnival Club and a 1969
graduate of Sophie Newcombe College, where she was president of Chi
Omega. Marietta spent much of her life in California, where she worked
in research and planning at UC-San Diego and UC-Irvine. After spending
over 20 years in education administration, she moved home to Nashville
and earned her Ph.D in Education from Vanderbilt in 2001. She began her
new career as an educator as an associate professor of education at
LSU. In 2005 she returned to New Orleans where she met her beloved
husband and was an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at
UNO. Marietta also held an MBA from San Diego State University.
Marietta was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a teacher, and a
leader...but most of all she was a cherished friend to so many. From
her grammar and high school friends in Nashville to her friends at
Newcombe to those she met along the way in California, at Vanderbilt,
in Baton Rouge, and at home in the French Quarter, she never met a
stranger or forgot a name. Services will be held Saturday, December 17,
at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 with visitation
before the service beginning at Noon. A memorial service in Nashville
will follow at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please send
memorial donations to of Louisiana, 8200 Hampson Street #425, New
Orleans, LA 70118-1050.
