BOONEVILLE – Marvin Jesse Smitherman, 87, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at his home after a long illness. He was a grocery store manager, moving to Booneville in 1946 to manage the Kroger store. He later was a partner in M&H Market and retired in 1992 from Big Star. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a Mason and a Scottish Rite. An avid golfer, he was a charter member of the Booneville Golf and Country Club.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the McMillan Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. W.L. Wallace and Bro. Bobby Hankins officiating. Burial will be in the Booneville Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Virginia Smith Smitherman; three sons, Marvin Richard Smitherman and his wife, Julie, of Rochester, Minn., Walter Lee Smitherman and his wife, Karen, of Long Beach, and John Stanley Smitherman and his wife, Kim, of Booneville; a sister, Louise Goode of Memphis; a brother, James Smitherman of Pontotoc; seven grandchildren, Rachel Johnson and her husband, Adam, and Suzanne, Richard, Christopher, Steven, Field and Jack Smitherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joel Wheeler and Myrtle Holditch Smitherman; a sister, Onice Smitherman; and two brothers, Tracy and Wheeler Smitherman Jr.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today and until service time Sunday.
