PRAIRIE – Mary E. Smitherman Smith, 89, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2013, at her home in the Una community of Prairie. She was born April 22, 1924, in Monroe County to Bertie Barnes and Grady Smitherman.

She had worked at TIL Garment Factory in Aberdeen, retiring in 1981. During World War II she worked at the Prairie Munitions Plant. She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.

She married Neal Hunter Smith on Sept. 28, 1940, in Clay County. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2009.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Lampkin officiating. The body will lie at the church from 1 p.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Cantrell Cemetery in Una. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include one daughter, Patsy Gene Howell (Randy) of West Point; one son, Neal Ray Smith (Linda) of Prairie; her daughter-in-law, Linda O. Smith of Houston; seven grandchildren, Rachelle Gwathney (Anthony), Tosha Rhea (Shane), Neal Smith (Emily), Courtney Todd (Adam), Helen McVay, Ronald Howell (Wendy) and Shawn Howell (Connie); 16 great-grandchildren, Hunter Shane Howell, Alaina Howell, Joshua Howell, Justin McVay, Jacob Vowell, Jack Bryant, Jadyn Bryant, Tanner Howell, Mary Elease Gwathney Young (Jessie), Matthew Gwathney, Maggie Gwathney, Kaylee Rhea, Mitchell Smith, Faith Coggins, Molly Kate Todd and McKennon Todd.

Preceding her in death were sons, Rex Smith and Raymond Smith; a great-grandson, Daniel Howell; six sisters and seven brothers.

Pallbearers will be Ron Howell, Neal Smith, Shawn Howell, Shane Rhea, Anthony Gwathney, Barry Smitherman, AdamTodd and B.J. Smitherman.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Saturday at Calvert Funeral Home.
