Services for Mrs. Mary Jane Smitherman, 91 of Carthage, Texas will be
10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 24, 2010 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home
Chapel. Mrs. Smitherman died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 in Carthage,
Texas.Mrs. Mary Jane Thomas Smitherman was born March 21, 1919 in Panola County, Texas. She was one of three children born to the marriage of Raymond Grady and Elouise Walker Thomas. Mrs. Smitherman graduated from Carthage schools, later graduating Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelors in Social Science, she attended both The University of Houston and Rice University obtaining her Masters Degree. Mary Jane taught social sciences in Vidor, Texas later serving her country, proudly, as a First Lieutenant in the U. S. Women's Army Corps. She served in the Asiatic Theater overseas in Manilla, Luzon, New Guinea and the Phillipines. Mary Jane met and married J. P. Smitherman and they celebrated many years together before his death. Mrs. Smitherman taught the blind for many years in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Smitherman is preceded in death by her husband, J.P Smitherman, and brother, Raymond Walker Thomas.
Mrs. Smitherman is survived by her Step daughters, Sherry and Charlotte Smitherman; sister, Betty Thomas Dennis of Eastern Maryland, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
