Mary Ann "Bubble" Smitherman Alexander Oct. 14, 1917 - May 5, 2014 Mrs. Mary Ann "Bubble" Smitherman Alexander, 96, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014 at Trinity Elms. She was born October 14, 1917 in Yadkin County, the daughter of Robert and Ella Martin Smitherman. She had worked as a buyer with The Ideal and later with Bocock-Stroud in the gift division. A former member of 1st Presbyterian Church (Winston-Salem), she had taught Sunday school and helped to form Cub Scout Pack #17. She presently is a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. A Past Worthy Matron of the Walter Kearns Chapter #718 Order of the Eastern Star, she also had volunteered for 17+ years at Medical Park Hospital. She loved to read, listen to music, in her earlier year's tint photographs, but always loved to help others through volunteering. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, her favorite saying was "To Rest is to Rust". She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jackson C. Alexander; a sister, Blanche Ulman and two brothers, Col. Willis Smitherman, U.S. Army (ret.) and Lowell Smitherman. Survivors include her daughter, Anne Lowish and husband, Matthew of Advance; two sons, Charles J. "Chuck" Alexander, II and wife, Marion of Lake Norman and Robert C. "Bob" Alexander and wife, Linda of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Kristen Jurgens of Palo Alto, CA, Audrey Hood of Charlotte, Scott Alexander of Kernersville, Cameron Alexander of Winston-Salem, Shannon May of Winston-Salem and Ashley Carter of Winston-Salem and ten great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 8th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Frank Vogler and Sons, Clemmons Chapel. Inurnment will be private in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family wishes to thank the staff of Trinity Elms for their exceptional love and care, as well as the sitters that made her return home possible.
