Mrs. Melissa E. Smitherman, 88
year old widow of a Confederate veteran, died at the home of her
cousin, Mrs. W. H. Cottingham, in Centreville at 7 o'clock last night
after an illlness of two weeks.
Mrs. Smitherman was born and reared in Alabama and spent the last 22 years of her life in Centreville, living with her cousin for 14 years.
She was the widow of Jim Smitherman, who died a number of years ago. No close relatives survive her.
Funeral services were to be held at the Mount Zion Baptist Church near Centreville, of which she was a member for 21 years, at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Two ministers, the Rev. J.T. Gannes and the Rev. E.M. Hambrice, were to conduct the services with burial to take place in the church cemetery. Foster Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
