Mildred was born to J.K. and Susie Bean on March 24, 1936. She grew up on the family farm with her three older brothers Kenneth, Walter and Donald outside of Silverton, Texas. Mildred attended school in Silverton graduating as valedictorian.

Mildred married Philip Smitherman on April 2, 1953. Together they reared two sons Marc and Monty on their own family farm in South Plains, Texas. Being a loving mother and wife was her greatest joy. She was a huge sports fan and delighted in watching her two sons play ball. Mildred and Philip moved to Floydada where they made their home for the last 43 years.

Mildred worked for many years in the cotton industry, keeping books and selling cotton for various gins in the Floydada area. She took great pride in trying to get the best price possible for "her" farmers. Those left to cherish her memory are husband Philip Smitherman, son Marc and his wife Michele Smitherman of Maryville, Tenn.; son Monty Smitherman of Silverton and her grandson Jake Smitherman of Knoxville, Tenn. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents J.K. and Susie Bean, her brother Walter Bean, and daughter-in-law Bobbie Smitherman. The family would like to extend a special word of thanks to the staff and nurses at the Hale Center Health and Rehab Center and the wonderful ladies of Hospice
