nancy (henderson) smitherman

NORTHPORT | Nancy H. Smitherman, age 74, of 13654 Highway 171, Northport, died August 30, 2005 at home. Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Five Points Baptist Church, Northport, with Rev. Ben Jameson officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel B. Smitherman, Sr., sister, Tommie Hamner, and parents, Clifford and Pauline Henderson.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Lenahan; son, Daniel B. Smitherman, Jr.; sisters, Betty LeGrone Brown and Polly Turner; grandchildren, Amy M. Smitherman, Steven D. Smitherman, Art Lenahan III, Kate Lenahan, William D. Bordessa and Dena Soulakis; great-grandchildren, Will Bordessa, Sophie Bordessa, T.J. Soulakis, Grace Bordessa, and Daniel Jackson Smitherman.

Nancy was born in Knoxville, Ala. in 1931. She attended and graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1948 and earned a subsequent degree from the University of Alabama in 1957 and a Masters Degree in 1975. She worked for the Alabama Power Company for over 30 years as a home economist and in commercial marketing. Nancy was very active in Five Points Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School for numerous years. She also was very active in ALTRUSA, the Children's Hands-On Museum, and the Alabama Power Company Energizers. She also was an avid Bridge player and outstanding cook.

Pallbearers will be Steven Smitherman, Andrew Soulakis, Wendall Smitherman, William Bordessa, Art Lenahan, Jr., and Art Lenahan, III.

Honorary pallbearers are Lonnie Smitherman, Lance Hagan, John Richardson, Tom Grammas, Fred Brown, and Wayne Patrick.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Five Points Baptist Church; Tommie Hamner Scholarship Phi Upsilon Omicron, P.O. Box 329, Fairmont, WV 26555; or Hospice of West Alabama.
