Nellie (norton) smitherman

Mrs. Nellie Norton Smitherman, 86, of Fairfield Oaks Apt. 15, member of a prominent Shreveport family, died at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday in her residence after a long illness. She was the widow of James Emory Smitherman.

An Obion County, Tenn., native, Mrs. Smitherman lived in Shreveport for about 50 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Music Forum. Until recently, she was a supporter of many Christian organizations.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Osborn Funeral Home with the Rev. Leonard Dupree, assistant pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mabel N. Radcliffe of Dallas, Tex.; three stepsons, James E. Smitherman Jr. and G. Scott Smitherman, both of Shreveport; and Gene A. Smitherman of Houston, Tex.; and two great-nephews, Richard Norton III and Lewis Norton, both of Shreveport.

Pallbearers will be Robert Smitherman, Harold Smitherman, F. L. Norton, Ben Harkrider, Dewey Presley, Tom Shelby, Charles Roberts Jr. and Charles Smitherman.
