Thursday, March 16, 1876,  N.C. ARGUS (Wadesboro’, Anson County, NC) - Troy, N.C.

We are grieved to announce the death of Noah SMITHERMAN, which took place on Monday night, the 28th ult., at 12 o’clock, at the residence of his brother, Jesse SMITHERMAN, in Troy, in the 67th year of his age.  He was struck with paralysis about a year before he died…. He was never married; and, although he had been a man of great strength of Constitution, his health gradually declined under the stroke until disease seized upon his organs, resulting in congestion of the lungs which swept his spirit "to regions of immortal light."

He died in peace and good will with his fellowmen, and goes down to his grave honored and respected by all who knew his sterling qualities and social vittues.

We can but admire the heroic and Christian fortitude with which he endured his last sufferings on earth.

He was heard to say. " I am not afraid to die." What fortitude!  What resignation to the will of his Creator!!

Mr. Smitherman was a man of great perservance and indominable energy, and his labors were crowned with the acquisition of a handsome fortune.  He was a man of signal honesty and stern integrity.  He was never married.  He bestowed his affections on his only brother and upon affectionate nephews and nieces.  He possessed a heart fulll of that affection and love which characterize the great and good.

His remains were followed to the cemetery of the Troy Methodist church, on the evening of the 29th of February, by a large concourse of friends and relatives; and intered amid their tears and sorrows.

Our town is clad in mourning over his death, and sympathize deeply with his near dear relatives left behind to mourn his loss. --

He has gone to the tomb where
"No pain nor grief nor anxious fear
Invades her bounds; no mortal woes
Can reach the peaceful sleeper here---
White angels watch the soft repose."
