BANNER ELK -
Mr. Peter Franklin
Smitherman , 67, of South Slope Circle died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at
his residence. He was born Sept. 8, 1933, in Winston-Salem, Forsyth
County, to
the late John and Mary Olive Smitherman. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa
from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served in the U.S.
Navy. He was
instrumental in preventing the Ninth Street connector from destroying
Hanes
Park and adjacent neighborhoods. As a founder of the West End
Association, he
reversed the decay of what is now a historic district. He continued to
improve
the West End by moving the Zevely house to its present location and by
opening
it as a restaurant in which he was owner and operator for a number of
years. He
was also responsible for converting a derelict gas station into a
popular
downtown meeting place called Johanna Shobers. He left a lasting
impression as
both businesses still thrive today. He was one of a kind and will be
greatly
missed. At Pete's request, his ashes will be "disposed of economically"
at his nemesis, the 14th fairway at Sugar Mountain Golf Club, Saturday,
Nov. 4,
2000, at 3 p.m., one hour prior to "cocktail hour." "Take five,
smoke 'em if you got 'em." Pete is survived by his son, Kirk Smitherman
and wife Joanna, and their children, Maggie and Jeffrey of Zebulon; his
stepson, Peter Dalton Fox and his son, Walter Dalton Fox of
Winston-Salem; and
his brothers, John Smitherman of Gainesville, Fla., and James
Smitherman of
Houston, Texas. Arrangements by Hampton Funeral Service in Boone.
