EAST BEND -
Ralph Alexander Poindexter Sr. of 1715 Butner Mill Road, East Bend,
died Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Poindexter
was born
Nov. 9, 1924, the son of the late Lucy Speas and Clinton Brooks
Poindexter. He
was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Smitherman
Poindexter.
Mr. Poindexter attended Hanes High School in Winston-Salem and
graduated from
East Bend High School. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and served his
country during
World War II. Mr. Poindexter was a farmer all of his adult life and
especially
loved working with both dairy and beef cattle, but had a private
passion for
raising watermelons with methods taught to him by his grandfather. Mr.
Poindexter is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carolyn Capshaw
Poindexter, of
the home; five children, Caroline (Jerry) Taylor of Winston-Salem,
Julia
(Dwight) Hinnant of Oak Island, Ralph A. "Sandy" Poindexter Jr.
(Linda) of East Bend, Brad Poindexter (Jonsie) of Madison and Brooke
(Scott)
Balum of Alpharetta, Ga.; a sister, Doris (Lenwood) Ammons of
Winston-Salem;
five grandchildren, Richard (Brandy) Hinnant of Four Oaks, Katherine
Anne
Taylor of Rock Hill, S.C., Abigail Mackenzie of Madison, and William
Alexander
and Thaddeus Edward Balun of Alpharetta; and great-grandson Richard A.
Hinnant
Jr. of Four Oaks. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today,
June
15, at Stony Knoll United Methodist Church, East Bend, with the Rev.
Richard
Buffkin officiating. The family will receive friends after the services
in the
fellowship hall of Stony Knoll Church. Memorials may be made to Stony
