Robert Arthur Smitherman passed away in Riverside on Jan. 20, 2005, at the age of 77.

Robert graduated from Puente High School and Mount San Antonio College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. He began working for Rubottom Cabinets when it was first established in El Monte in 1946. When the company relocated to Ventura in 1957, Robert became co-owner of Tempo Cabinets, which served the Southern California custom home industry for almost 40 years. In 1968, Robert moved with his family to Moreno Valley, where he lived for the next 38 years. Robert retired in 1993 and then enjoyed traveling the world and restoring his 1930 Model A Ford. Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Jo, in 1991.

He is survived by his sister, Trudy of Romoland; brother, Tom (wife Dodie) of Oakland, Ore.; daughter, Bettie (husband Jim) of Ventura; sons, Jim (wife Carol) of Sparks, Nev., and Joel (wife Nancy) of Surprise, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held on Jan. 29, at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Habitat for Humanity.
