ruth (mcnichols) smitherman

HAVILAND -- Ruth Smitherman, 73, died Sept. 18, 2001, at Hilltop Manor, Cunningham.

She was born Aug. 17, 1928, at Burr Oak, the daughter of Loren M. and Mabel Gossard McNichols. A resident of Haviland since 1945, she graduated from Haviland Friends Academy in 1946, then attended Friends Bible College (now Barclay College), Haviland. She was a bookkeeper for Cablevision services, and a homemaker.

She belonged to Haviland Friends Church, where she served as an elder for nine years and as Sunday school superintendent in the junior department for 10 years. She was a member of the Kiowa County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was a 4-H leader. In 1984 and 1985, she was chosen as Kansas Flying Farmer Queen.

On Aug. 31, 1947, she married David F. Smitherman at North Branch Friends. He survives.

Other survivors include: a son, David Dwight, Haviland; two daughters, Linda Diane Clarkson, Cimarron, and Sandra Sue Skinner, Hugoton; two sisters, Mary Binford, Haviland, and Eunice Kinser, Coyle, Okla.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Haviland Friends Church, with the Rev. Robin Johnston presiding. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fleener Chapel, Greensburg.

Burial will be in Haviland Cemetery.
