TUSCALOOSA | Ruth Patton Smitherman, 78, of 800 Rice Valley Road, North, died September 5, 2003 at her residence. Private burial services will be followed by a memorial service today, September 7, 2003 at 3 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa with Dr. Kevin Cauley officiating. The family will visit with friends in the church Great Hall following the service. Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel directing.

Mrs. Smitherman was preceded in death by her parents Dr. David Boykin Patton and Mrs. Louise Cooper Patton; her son Richard Patton Smitherman; a brother David B. Patton, Jr. and sisters Eleanor Patton Neely and Dorothy Patton Johnson.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Conrad Smitherman; son David Conrad Smitherman (Torrey) of Birmingham, daughter Ann Smitherman Brenizer (Scott) of Tuscaloosa; grandsons David Van Antwerp Smitherman and Garet Patton Smitherman of Birmingham, and James David Bryan of Tuscaloosa; granddaughters Sarah Patton Bryan and Kathryn Ann Bryan of Tuscaloosa, and nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Smitherman was born in Tuscaloosa and graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1942. She attended the University of Alabama and was affiliated with Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.

She was a member of the Junior League of Tuscaloosa, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Les Amis Study Club. She was the co-founder of the First Presbyterian Pre-School and served as director and teacher. Ruth and Connie were avid travelers, having enjoyed many trips to Europe and throughout the North American continent. She was a gracious hostess to their many Gulf coast friends at their second home on Perdido Key as well as those in Tuscaloosa.

A life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa, Mrs. Smitherman served as president of the Women of the Church, a deacon and an elder. She was awarded "life-time membership" status during a special Sunday service in 1991.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa or Hospice of West Alabama.
