shelby (smith) conley smitherman

Shelby Conley Smitherman, 74, of Richmond, formerly of Crozet, went to be with the Lord June 30 at Memorial Regional Hospital in Mechanicsville.

She was born a Coal Miners Daughter on Aug. 27, 1936, in Pikesville, Ky., a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Smith and Alene Lowe Smith.

Mrs. Smitherman first came to Virginia around 1950-51 era and worked as a waitress during the summer. She went back home to Union, West Virginia, to school and came back the following year to live. She worked several years in the restaurant industry. In 1963, she went to work for the Boars Head Inn in the secretarial pool and worked her way up to director of Human Resources. She retired in 1995 after 32 years of service. She was 1st runner up in the Miss Albemarle Contest in 1957, and played women’s softball for the Boars Head Inn where she served as a team captain.

She is survived by her husband, Ray Carol Smitherman of Texas; one daughter, Francia R. Tapscott and her husband, John, of Nelson County; one grandson, Eric W. Herring and his wife, Jessica, of Richmond; one great- grandchild, Kyra Blaine Herring; and one step-great-grandchild, Neven Coy, all of Richmond; one brother, Ronald Lee Smith of Ohio; three sisters, Anna Lucille Dixon of Atlanta, Wanda Lou Bennett of Texas, and Donna Marie Smith of Frenchburg, Kentucky; and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew Jackson Smith Jr., Billy James Smith, and Harold Leslie Smith; four sisters, Helen Uvon Bostic, Audrey Mae Dixon, Betty Joe Blankenship, and Barbara Sue Williams.

A memorial service was held July 9 at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Gordonsville, with Pastor Ronnie Smith officiating.

The family would like to thank the staff at Regional Memorial Hospital and all of the Hospice Nurses who took such good care of her.
