Tony Morgan Smitherman was born Aug. 13, 1947, in Selma, Ala., the son of Shirley Bass and the late Sim T. Smitherman Jr. He died Sept. 8, 2004, as a result of a hit-and-run driver near his home in Highland, N.Y., at the age of 57 years and 26 days.

He attended school at Louisburg and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1966. After attending college for about a year he enlisted in the U.S. Navy with his brother Leslie, and they attended boot camp together at Great Lakes Training Center at Chicago, Ill. After serving from 1968 to 1972, he worked at various jobs in New York and other areas along the East Coast.

In 1997 he and Renee were united in marriage. This union brought two stepchildren and three step-grandchildren into his life. They made their home in Highland, N.Y., where he resided and worked as a stockman in a warehouse at the time of his death. He was a CB enthusiast.

He was preceded in death by his father; and his brother, John Leslie Smitherman.

Survivors include his wife, Renee, of the home; his mother, Shirley Bass and Earl; two brothers: Sim Thorton Smitherman II "Smitty" and Gloria, Louisburg, and Robert Lee Bass and Connie, Riverside; one sister, Donna Jean Carlisle and Steve, Louisburg; two stepchildren; three step-grandchildren; plus other family and friends who will all sadly miss him.
