Tony W. Smitherman, 51, died Aug. 18, 1993 at 1022 W. Seventh St., Greenfield.

He was born Dec. 10, 1941, in New Castle, and had lived in Greenfield since 1989.  He lived in Pendleton from 1978 to 1989 and during that time, was active with the Pendleton Junior Baseball Association.  He had served as coach, manager and president of the major league.  He also coached little league basketball teams at the Wilson Boys' and Girls' Club in Anderson.

He was a 1960 graduate of New Castle High School.  He attended Indiana Central College and the University of Maryland.  He served in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1963.

He retired on disability from the Indiana Reformatory in 1992 after 20 years of employment.  For the past 13 years, he served as staff training director.

After his retirement he was honored by the Indiana Department of Correction who named the main classroom at the Reformatory Training Center in his honor.

He was a former member of Pendleton American Legion Post 117 and New Castle Eagles Club and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Greenfield.

Survivors include his wife, Connie (Long) Smitherman, whom he married Feb 18, 1967;  four sons, Brian Scott Smitherman, Grissom A.F.B., Peru, Steven W. Smitherman of Indianapolis, Gary T. Smitherman of Anderson and Michael D. Smitherman of Greenfield; a daughter, Paula J. Smitherman of Mechanicsburg; a half brother, Marvin Smitherman of Merritt Island, Fla; two sisters, Janet Knotts of New Castle and Joan McGrath of Creve Coeur, Mo; a half sister, Margaret Boris; four grandsons, and two stepgrand-daughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, W.B. Smitherman and Mildred Carender.

Services will be at 10 p.m. Saturday at Wilson St. Pierre Bright Chapel in Pendleton with the Rev. Jack Duckworth officiating.  Burial will be at Grovelawn Cemetery in Pendleton where military graveside services will be conducted by Pendleton American Legion Post 117.

Memorial contributions may be given to St. John's Hospital Hospice Center.
