Velora Blanche (stockwell) Scott

WHITING, Iowa -- Velora Blanche Scott, 90, of Whiting died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Whiting Christian Church, with the Rev. Rusty Hedger officiating. Burial will be in Whiting Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Velora was born March 5, 1914, in Little Sioux, Iowa, the daughter of Vard Stockwell and Merea (Crabb) McAdon. She was raised in the Little Sioux area and graduated from Little Sioux High School.

She married John Matthew Scott on Feb. 4, 1933, in Onawa, Iowa. The majority of their lives, the couple made their home in Whiting, where they raised their five children. She was a "stay-at-home mom" and loved caring for her family. Later, she cooked at the Whiting Community School for 13 years.


She was a member of Whiting Christian Church, Dorcus Society and American Legion Emery Johnson Post 481 Auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting and cooking. She was a wonderful devoted mother.

Survivors include her children, Jean Witt of Whiting, Carolyn (Larry) Higdon of Kodak, Tenn., John (Janet) Scott of Whiting, Sandra (David) Smitherman of Des Moines and Kathy (Paul) Cleek of Missouri Valley, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Fama McCandles of Peoria, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; two brothers; and three sisters.

Memorials may be made to Jean Witt to be used in a Whiting betterment project.
