walter guy smitherman 

Walter Guy Smitherman, 51, prominent Troy businessman, died suddenly at 3:15 o'clock this morning at the residence of a heart attack.  He had been in declining health for some time.

Mr. Smitherman was one of the leading businessmen of this section. He was a large stockholder in the Smitherman Cotton mills, and was a member of the firm of Wallace and Smitherman Lumber company. He was a large peach grower and until recently was owner of an automobile agency.  At the time of his death he was a member of the town commission.

Mr. Smitherman was a World War Veteran and served overseas. He attended Trinity college, now Duke University, and in 1917 was married to Miss Callie Nance of Troy, who with a son, Samuel, survives.  Also surviving are six sisters, Mrs. R.W. Royal of Hendersonville, Mrs. Frank Hurley of Troy, Mrs. Carrie S. Hurley, Mrs. Mary Lamar and Mrs. Grace Brown, all of Miami, and Mrs. W.L. Trotter of Greensboro.

Funeral services will be held at the Trinity Methodist church, of which he was a member, Saturday afternoon, at 4 o'clock.  Interment will be in the local cemetery.
