Mr. Wesley Alton Smitherman, known to his friends as Smitty or Bud, died Friday morning, July 25, 1997, at Cone Memorial Hospital at the age of 69.

Mr. Smitherman was born Oct. 31, 1927 in Forsyth Co., a son of Wade H. and Anna Mickless Smitherman. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. A master mason, he was a member and past Master of the Corinthian Lodge 542 A.F. & A.M. He was a Shriner and member of the Scottish Rights, the Oasis Temple of the Shrine, the Oriental Shrine Club and a member of the Oriental Shrine Band.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Smitherman and a daughter, Debbie Smitherman. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Hank (Donna) Thompson of Greensboro; three sisters, Yvonne Vestal of Pfafftown, Mrs. Alta Reece of Swannonoa and Mrs. Gypsy Holcomb of Jonesville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Chapel. Entombment will be in Guilford Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home tonight from 7-9 p.m.
