William Martin Smitherman, 88, a resident of Springdale, died Sunday Dec. 14, 2003, at Northwest Medical Center of Washington County in Springdale.  He was born Aug. 18, 1915, in Springdale to Harold Edison and Dola Dennis Dyes Smitherman.

Bill was a graduate of Springdale High School, Class of 1933, and a graduate of the University of Arkansas.   After graduation, he was hired by the United Fruit Co. in Guatemala.  When he returned from World War II, where he served in the United States Navy achieving the rank of Seaman 1st, he was hired by Eastern Airlines and lived in Hialeah, Fla.  He and his wife, Gertrude Phillips Smitherman, moved to Springdale in 1992.  She preceded him in death July 18, 1997. Two sisters preceded him in death, Mary Francis Reid on Sept. 19, 2003, and Bettye Mohney, on Oct. 25, 1988.

Survivors include two brothers, Jack Smitherman and wife Ann of Fayetteville and Bob Smitherman and wife Eleanor of Springdale; five nephews, Jack Smitherman of Flour Bluff, Texas, Greg Mohney and Mike Mohney, both of Springdale, Cranston Reid of Lubbock, Texas, and Robert E Brown of Runaway Bay, Texas; three nieces, Carolyn Smitherman Creamer of Weatherford, Texas, Dyan Smitherman Brannon of Fayetteville and Debra Mohney Mallard of Lincoln.

A private graveside service was held Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003 , at Bluff Cemetery in Springdale with the Rev. Rodney Weeks officiating.  Arrangements were by Sisco Funeral Chapel of Springdale.
