EAST BEND - Mr. Joseph Gray Smitherman, 75, of East Bend died Thursday morning, Sept. 11, 2003, at Willowbrook Health Care in Yadkinville. Mr. Smitherman was born May 2, 1928, in Yadkin County to Hobert Ross and Eva Hutchens Smitherman. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Lewisville.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Stacy Hobson Smitherman of the home; a daughter, Judy (the Rev. H. Dean) Chandler of East Bend; two granddaughters, Rebecca (David) Waddell of Rural Hall and Judena (Steven) Hutchens of East Bend; two sisters, Gladys Ann (Everette "Buddy") Butner of Rural Hall and Nancy (Harvey) Miller of Yadkinville; and a brother, Donald (Olive D.) Smitherman of East Bend.
Mr. Smitherman was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jeffery Gray Smitherman; a sister, Queen Lawson; and a brother, John Allen Smitherman.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. H. Dean Chandler, the Rev. Bob Whitaker and Dr. Bud Owens, with burial to follow at the East Bend Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Smitherman will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Sept. 12, at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend.
