Orland C. Smitherman, 85, of Oak Ridge, passed away at his home, July 16, 2007. Mr. Smitherman was the son of Roy C. and Clara Wallace Smitherman (both deceased) of the Antioch Community near Centreville, in Bibb County, Alabama, where he grew up during the Great Depression years. He graduated from the Bibb County Public Schools in 1940 where he was a football standout in high school, and was awarded a football scholarship to the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, while Sewanee was still a member of the Southeastern Conference. He earned a B. S. degree in Physics from Sewanee in 1944 and because of wartime priorities, came directly to Oak Ridge to participate in the Manhattan Project. He began his employment in Oak Ridge as a physicist with the Tennessee Eastman Company at Y-12. After approximately one year he transferred to the Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Company of Union Carbide Corporation and worked the remainder of his career at the K-25 Plant. He worked there as a physicist and in various managerial positions until his retirement from the Martin Marietta Corporation in 1984. He was a long time member of Glenwood Baptist Church where he was a Deacon. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Howington Smitherman. He is survived by his wife, Yonnie Tallant Smitherman, a daughter, Ea Jo Smitherman, a brother, Roy Smitherman and his wife, June, all of Oak Ridge, three sisters, Essie Mae Smitherman of Dothan, Alabama, Gail Butts, of Denver, Colorado, Joy Sheppard, of Marietta, Georgia, five nieces, three nephews, and a number of great nieces and nephews, and three step children, six step grand children, and a number of step great grand children. A private burial was held at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at Glenwood Baptist Church in Oak Ridge at 2:00 PM, Saturday, July 21, 2007.
