YADKINVILLE - Mr. Joseph "Joe" Edward Smitherman, 89, of Yadkinville, formerly of East Bend, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at Yadkin Nursing Care Center. He was born in Yadkin County on Oct. 19, 1916, to D.A. and Sarah Wall Smitherman. Mr. Smitherman was a member of New Home Methodist Church and attended Brookstown Methodist Church in Pfafftown. He loved his family, golf, bird hunting and his golfing and hunting buddies and was a lifelong supporter of the Republican Party. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II and was a member of the East Bend American Legion Post 336. After he completed school in East Bend, Mr. Smitherman moved to Winston-Salem, where he worked and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Mr. Smitherman was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sharon Burnette; his brothers and sisters, Mamie Wagoner, Bradford Smitherman, Sylvania Williams, Guy Smitherman and Glenn Smitherman; and a special friend, John Shore. Surviving are his daughter, Donna Smitherman, of Winston-Salem; a stepdaughter, Patricia (Mitchell) Butner, of Siler City; a brother, Dwight Smitherman, of East Bend; a sister by marriage, Jessie Pearl Smitherman, of East Bend; three grandchildren, Carrie Smitherman, Melissa (Bruce) Kelly and Dillard Lyle (Tammy) Burnett Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Cooper Lyle Barnett and Mary Grace Katherine Kelly; three stepgrandchildren, Jeffrey Mendenhall, Timmy Mendenhall and Tommy Mendenhall; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at Huff Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Patty Choplin officiating. Burial will follow in New Home Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, May 19, at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend, and immediately after the graveside service in New Home Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
